My opportunity to spend a year immersed in Torat Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael was facilitated through the incredible generosity of the Rabbi Abaranok scholarship. That year undoubtedly had a seminal impact on my life. Learning at Yeshivat Har Etzion particularly afforded me exposure to remarkable personalities who helped shaped my identity and life long passion for learning whereas participation in a Bnei Akiva program and the associated Tiyulim, Shabbatot and experiences generally, similarly enabled me to deepen my love for and enduring connection with the State of Israel. This would not have been possible without the generosity of the Rav Abaranok scholarship. Following my year in Israel, I was fortunate to develop a very personal Talmid-Rav relationship with Rav Abaranok z”l and I learned in his home on a weekly basis for several years. Rav Abaranok z”l was not only the quintessential paradigm of a Baal Derech Eretz, a Torah Jew and a Lamdan, but he also offered a window into a bygone era of Jewish Europe and a direct link to centuries of rich Jewish life and commitment. It was one of my life’s most profound privileges to know him. Yehi Zichro Baruch.

It could be argued that the most formative year of one’s life is post-VCE. For me, learning in Yeshiva in Israel was without a doubt the most fitting way to spend it. Being able to live in the heart of it all in Jerusalem, enveloped in the history of our nation and its’ land, unforgettable. Pushing myself to limits I never thought I could reach, under the guidance of Rebbeim and mentors who’re dedicated solely to the growth of their students. Imbuing in them a great passion for Torah and Yiddishkeit. I most definitely would not be where I am today without the help and encouragement I received from them. Thanks to the Rabbi Abaronok scholarship I was able to spend a year in a small Yeshiva called Pisga, with 11 others from Australia/South Africa. The relationships we built and experiences we shared together will most definitely remain with us forever. The Torah we learned there was unbelievable, I don’t believe any of us could’ve imagined the amount we would be able to push ourselves in our learning, day and night. Let’s not forget all the tiyulim (trips) through the land of Israel, meeting the people, living the culture.
For me, the skills I gained there were imperative for the future I decided to build for myself. At present still in learning, hoping to be able to share the knowledge I’ve gained through teaching. I can’t imagine I would have been able to get there without the scholarship. The understandably high price tag of a packed year, never a dull moment. It relieved the stress of that hurdle and allowed me like so many others to merit the incredible gift of learning Torah in the Holy Land! An unforgettable experience, which I would highly recommend to everyone.

A year and a half ago, I never would have imagined sitting where I am now, in an apartment in Jerusalem, typing this for the scholarship committee. I was a recipient of the Abaranok Scholarship in 2019, before life as we knew it and the world were turned upside-down. The ability to leave Australia for the first time in my life, and experience life in Israel; and not only experience the wonderful land and culture, but learn in a seminary for a year, was a formative experience for me and an absolute blessing. Because of the aid of the Scholarship and other wonderful benefactors, I was able to learn Torah intensely for a year in Israel. My eyes were opened to a world of scholarship, and my mind expanded in so many ways. Each moment of learning was the ultimate pleasure for my soul – combined with the exceptional teachers and mentors I had the privilege from which to learn, I was gifted an opportunity like no other, which has impacted me so deeply that I can confidently say that I am a changed person. There is a special holiness to the learning in the Holy Land, and especially in the city of Jerusalem, as if there is access to a higher level of G-dliness. Despite almost constant lockdown throughout my seminary year, the vibrancy of the land is so apparent, and the deep and impactful relationships I was able to form make up for the lockdowns tenfold. My entry into the world of Torah scholarship was so impactful that I decided to stay in Israel and continue to learn at a different seminary – the myriad ways in which to understand G-d’s wisdom, as well as the opportunity to develop an independent identity in my most formative years in the land of Israel is both a miracle and a gift. Because of this opportunity, the Abaranok Scholarship and its organisers and donors receive the merit for my learning, my love of Torah, and my Jewish observance, and that of my children and all of their subsequent generations.

It is extremely difficult for me to describe how fundamental my year in Israel was for me, and how instrumental the Abaranok Scholarship was in helping me realise my dream of studying in Midrasha in Israel. I could have never imagined a year and a half ago how much this year in Midrasha would inspire within me genuine spiritual and emotional growth. I could have never imagined the deep, lifelong friendships I created with those around me. I could have never imagined the incredible deep-rooted relationship I formed with Eretz Yisrael. Studying in Israel gave me the opportunity to spend a whole year working on myself, on my relationship with Hashem, and to delve deeply into who I really am, who I want to be, and who my community needs me to be. Coming back from this pivotal year of hard work and immense growth, I feel ready to be an active role model and member of my community. None of this would be possible without the Abaranok Scholarship and all those involved, and I would like to express my immense gratitude to the entire Abaranok community for giving me the greatest gift I could ask for.

The Rabbi Abaranok scholarship for learning in israel really opened my eyes to the beauty of Israel and Judaism. I had the privilege of living in the old city for a year which was an experience of a lifetime. It allowed me to see the possibilities of a real life in israel, which lead me to where I am today. I recently made aliyah and have started sheirut leumi. I am working at a school in kohav hashachar, a yishuv in the Binyamin region. I want to say thank you to the Abaranok scholarship for providing me the stepping stones, to begin my life in Israel.

Meir was fortunate to receive a scholarship in 2017-8. It enabled him to participate in. Gap year similar to what his peers were doing. He learnt many independent living skills and made lifelong contacts. The scholarship gave him the opportunity to visit Eretz Yisroel and experience life there. Without the scholarship he would not have been able to do this. Three years later he still talks about it and wants to back! It was a very positive and building experience for him.

Receiving the Abaranok Scholarship for Torah Studies in Israel was life changing. The idea of a gap year was a far fetched idea, since despite my dreams of going to Israel, the monetary aspects of a program deemed it near impossible. You can’t control your parents capabilities to send you for a year overseas, for some people, not having a gap year is a reality that they have to face. This scholarship provided me with a unique and unforgettable opportunity. I was awarded a gap year experience, full of Torah learning and life changing experiences, where without this scholarship, the experience would not exist. I was given the opportunity to explore my commitment and interest in Torah studies as well as my deep connection to Israel, and for that I am forever grateful. I think about my gap year a lot, it is an experience that moulded me, an experience that forced me to evaluate my beliefs, whist planting the foundations to build my Jewish identity. Since it is something that is such a huge part of me, I feel I truly owe it to those who awarded me this Scholarship. I hope to one day be able to have the means to change teenagers lives as I have experienced here myself.

It was always a given that I would spend a gap year in Israel but as the time drew closer, it was clear that this would be a financial strain for my family. Thanks to the Abaranok scholarship I was able to have the invaluable opportunity of a year of Jewish learning in Israel. My sense of identity, Jewish pride, and love for learning and our homeland grew over this time. My year away helped me establish strong priorities about the way in which I wanted to live my life and raise a family. More than this, I believe my year in Israel was an important stepping stone to finding my husband. I am so grateful to this scholarship for how it affected my lifeIt

The Abaranok Scholarship paved my way towards a gap year of studies at Midreshet Moriah. It has given me a lifetime of meaningful connections. Connections to our home country, Israel. Connections to wonderful people. Connections to my yiddishkeit that continues to infuse my family and connections to inner self. By witnessing so many different opinions, learning in shiurim with extraordinary teachers, and enjoying shabbatot around the country I have learnt to build meaningful connections between disparate parts of the Jewish people, of halacha, of our communities within Melbourne and across the seas.
The Abaranok Scholarship afforded me the ability to walk Jewish history, attend political events, and sing at kumsitzes. It was a year of developing my independence in an independent homeland, which continues to have an impact on my life.
My gap year in Israel inspired an aliyah, which I did 20 years later with my husband and 4 children. Although we now live in oz on our own “personal shlichut”, our kids are making their way back there, Baruch Hashem to a large family group. Thank you to the Rabbi Abaranok Scholarship for all it has brought.

Being awarded the Rabbi Abaranok Scholarship allowed me to study at Gush for a year on the MTA program. But even more than that, when coming home after my year in Israel, it gave me the confidence to lead, first in Bnei Akiva and from there in other communal organisations. Knowing I was the recipient of this scholarship gave me a duty to uphold its values and to truly give back to the community to which I was a part of. These foundations ultimately led me to being very involved in both the Canberra community and then to make Aliyah and get as involved as I could in various ways in the community in Israel.

Learning in Yeshiva in Israel was something I always wanted to do and was something I looked forward to doing my whole schooling.
The Rabbi Abaranok scholarship helped me achieve this goal.
This provided me with the privilege to learn Torah from amongst the best Torah scholars in the Religious Zionist world.
It was amazing to watch the Torah come to life in the confines of the Beit Midrash through people discussing and debating about the sugyot that were being learnt in Yeshiva from early morning until late at night.
My time in Yeshiva gave me the opportunity to grow and consolidate my Jewish Knowledge, learning and values amongst peers who shared the same desire to pursue Torah learning and strengthen their Jewish values. Yeshiva provided me with the tools and inspiration to continue learning and living a Torah lifestyle.
It was an honour to receive a scholarship in memory of a man like Rabbi Abaranok who lived a Torah dedicated life.
